| Free software downloads to protect your computer from other free software downloads | | Posted Wednesday, January 25, 2006 6:41:37 PM by Rose Martins | When it comes to free software, there is a host of choices. You can basically cover almost all your software needs by means of free software downloads.
There is free antivirus software for your PC or mac, free software for your palm pilot, free DVD software, free fax software, free CAD software, free software for your PDA, free anti-spyware software, free animation software, free photo software and free OCR software.
The only disadvantages of free software downloads, is that often the downloaded version is just a software demo and is not capable of all the full software package functions and is often valid for a limited period of time. Once this time period has expired, the free software download, will no longer function as required.
Free software downloads that are illegally gained, also sometimes have hidden spyware and add-ons linked to the download. Of course if you have free anti-spyware and anti-virus software downloaded already, this won't be such an issue for you.
The issue with illegal free software downloads, is that recently more and more users are being caught. The perpetrators are faced with law suits and the possibility of hefty fines, often a lot more expensive than the simple cost of legal software downloads.

The critics of the deal have been asking the foundation's board to ban Novell from distributing new versions of Linux software. The Free Software Foundation is expected to disclose its ruling within two weeks. Novell has declined to comment on this issue. ....

| | | Review: AVG Internet Security 7.5 internet security software | | Posted Thursday, January 11, 2007 2:59:20 PM by Blog57 Team | | AVG could just be one of the most generous companies in the world. For years it has offered a free download of its anti-virus software. Although many are grateful for this there is, of course, a paid-for option too. Grisoft, its Czech creator, is hoping people will upgrade to its full internet security suite. AVG Internet Security has just reached version 7.5 and consists of anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam and firewall programs. Installation is very simple; load the software from the supplied CD, enter the licence number and select the type of PC you're installing the firewall on. From AVG’s point of view there are four types: Allow everything, Block everything, Computer in domain and Standalone PC. Obviously these choices aren’t exactly clear, not only for their descriptions but for their purposes too.... | |

On Monday, the computer maker, which is striving to return to consistent profitability, made several key components of Java available for free download and will release the rest in 2007. | | | Free software still legal - judge | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 1:10:36 PM by Blog57 Team | | After suing the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in 2005 for price-fixing and finally losing earlier this year, Wallace filed an action against IBM, Novell and Red Hat alleging that the companies' distribution of Linux under the GNU General Public License (GPL) violated US federal antitrust law. Not to be deterred by the dismissal of this new case after the district court judge found that he didn't have a leg to stand on, Wallace kept fighting the free-software "conspirators" right up to the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. That court affirmed the dismissal this week, after finding that Wallace did indeed lack even the slightest shred of a case against the companies. ....
