Don't be fooled. That free ringtone comes at a high price
Posted Wednesday, January 25, 2006 6:35:44 PM by Rose Martins

Every mobile phone company will offer a certain number of free ringtones. Nokia, Nextel Sprint, Verizon, Motorola, Cingular - they all offer some free ringtones with your new phone purchase.

These free ringtones are often common to most mobile phones and for anything funky, trendy or hot, one needs to download the ringtone off the internet to your mobile phone.

Free RingtoneThe catch comes when downloading free ringtones off the internet. Many of the ringtone clubs will offer a free ringtone download, asking you to agree to their rules. And what are their rules? They reserve the right to then send you a certain number of ringtones per week, at a price.

And you've made a commitment to them by clicking on the "I agree to the terms and conditions" button. You can cancel this commitment to purchase these unwanted ringtones, but your phone must be polyphonic compatible, be Internet-enabled and have text messaging capability.

You must be the owner of the mobile phone and either be at least sixteen years old or have the permission of your parent or guardian. So beware and take care when downloading that "free" ringtone. Don't be fooled and caught unaware.

"The hills are alive with the sound of music"
Posted Tuesday, January 10, 2006 10:10:40 AM by Rose Martins

Is it the sound of music? The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity website is offering free ringtones with a difference. The ringtones are of a woman singing a part of the nun's "Peach and All Good" theme song. According to the National Catholic Reporter, vocations promoter Sr Julie Ann Sheahan said "As consecrated women we are encouraged by our church to make known the beauty and truth of our lives through the marvels of technology,"

Free ringtones - the 'hip' of advertising.
Posted Tuesday, January 10, 2006 10:05:01 AM by Rose Martins
Downloadables are the buzz word of the day. And with ringtones reaching unbelievable proportions, advertisers are recognizing opportunity. Some of the world's most prominent lifestyle brands like Harley-Davidson and Tag-Heuer, offer ringtones and wallpaper free of charge, and it seems that DaimlerChrysler is following suit. It's an effective medium of advertising that facilitates stronger consumer relationships.

2006 The Year in Jazz
Posted Monday, January 08, 2007 2:58:14 PM by Blog57 Team
In the jazz world, 2006 was a year that defied a tidy little description. There was much going on, including the continuing efforts to rebuild New Orleans from the tragic and deadly aftermath of August 2005's Hurricane Katrina. Support initiatives for Crescent City musicians and their unfathomable losses continued all year. There seemed to be some New Orleans presence at virtually every major jazz festival. While a lot of musicians still couldn't go home to New Orleans, they were ambassadors for their history-rich city... ambassadors who could be found touring all over the world. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival went on as scheduled in April and May, despite major logistical obstacles in and around the city. The festival did pare one day and one stage from its humongous schedule but reports from the Crescent City indicate the music was emotional and powerful....

SANTA CLARA, California: Internet security firm McAfee, Inc. says search engine users are at a considerable risk of visiting unsafe sites as the search engines do not have fool-proof systems to alert the users against such sites. The firm's McAfee Site Advisor carried out an investigation of five major U.S. search engines -- Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL and Ask -- as a follow-up of an earlier study in May and found that though the overall chance of clicking a risk site had declined by 12 per cent, users had clicked through to risky sites more than 268 million times each month. The investigation, conducted under the supervision of Ben Edelman, noted spyware researcher and an advisor to McAfee, broadly indicated that: -- all search engines returned some risky results. -- on average, 4.4 per cent of search results link to risky websites....

The pop-rock revisionism of Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 1:05:24 PM by Blog57 Team
In the flush of youth, Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow would have laughed to think their careers would ever be linked. Back then the early 1970s Stewart was a rock kingpin strutting his rooster haircut in the Faces and scoring solo hits including Maggie May. Manilow, though a year younger than Stewart, was acting like rock never happened, arranging Andrews Sisters songs for Bette Midler and stepping toward easy-listening superstardom. Stewart surfed the wave of a counterculture going mainstream; Manilow aimed at a Middle America that viewed rock as a rip in the continuum from Nat King Cole to the Carpenters. But years gone by make friends of former ideological adversaries. Today, Stewart and Manilow are united in rewriting the musical and, by extension, cultural history of rock. Their latest releases share much beyond the tinted coifs, bad suit jackets and knowing smiles the singers wear in their cover portraits....

Can you hear me now?

I'm certainly not an uber-geek, but I spend a lot of time with computers and I teach a course about how computers and communications affect society, so in theory I should be an expert on things technological. But every once in a while there are hints of cracks in the facade. This year they've converged on a pervasive technology where I've clearly fallen way behind. In July there was a story of a guy cheating on his wife and trading hot text messages with his girlfriend via cell phone. He decided to upgrade and sold the old one (the phone, not the girlfriend) on eBay, where the buyer, who was doing a study about what information remains on secondhand cell phones, discovered the messages. One imagines that the guy might be a bit worried that his wife will find out....

The Shins Recording Third Album
Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 7:10:11 PM by Blog57 Team
Having successfully changed all of our lives, indie pop juggernauts the Shins are hanging up their superhero capes and getting back to what they do best: making music. The band recently entered their home studio (located in frontman James Mercer's basement) with reliable producer Phil Ek, who manned the boards on 2003's Chutes Too Narrow. As of right now, very little progress has been made on their as-yet-untitled third album, with drum tracks being laid down this week, but Pitchfork will keep you updated on the status of what is likely to become the soundtrack to any number of 2006/2007 romantic comedies concerning quirky contemporary twentysomethings. The Shins will be leaving their subterranean lab only four times in the coming weeks, greeting the adoring public as the opening act for three White Stripes shows and as part of the massive Vegoose festival....
