Other internet service providers are offering free broadband upgrades to existing customers, to prevent them from changing to another internet service provider that is offering a better free deal.

Once you have your internet connection, especially with a broadband connection, the world of free internet opportunties is open to you. There are free internet radio, free internet music, free internet TV, free internet phones, free internet faxing and almost all internet browers are also free. And it doesn't end at that………..for those of you who love to play computer games, there are free games being offered continuously on the internet.

Whether you prefer poker, cards, word games or a virtual casino………the internet has it all and often for free. And so you might be asking yourself, how exactly do all these businesses make money if everything they offer is for free? Firstly, not everything that appears to be for free on the internet, is actually for free. And secondly, revenue is generated by means of advertising. Most of the pop-ups, banners and sponsored links, are paid for by the company or product being advertised.

Q: It has been reported that your mom Freida has made a point of discussing a book you read every month since you left college? Do you actually still do that? I don't have to. It's just something we do sometimes. We haven't done it in a while. But I always read books, that's one of the things I love. We've just kind of been slipping on the book club thing. Maybe we'll try to start it back up. Q: Do you have a best book or best author? Not right now. Once I get up in the 100 range, I'll have a favourite. ....

Sun to offer Java code for free on the Internet
Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 3:00:25 AM by Blog57 Team
Sun Microsystems said Monday that it would make its Java software a free product in a move that represented one of the largest additions of computer code to the open- source community. Java will be distributed under a licensing plan that lets developers view and modify the software and also distribute it for free with other open- source technology, Sun said. Sun created the Java programming language in 1995 to give developers a way to write software once and have it run on different devices and operating systems. Until now, Sun has kept a protective hold on Java to ensure that implementations remain compatible, and it even won $20 million from Microsoft in 2001 after challenging Microsoft's modifications to the program. "The current licensing had made it difficult to package and redistribute the Java platform by Linux and open-source developers," said Stephen O'Grady, a technology analyst with RedMonk in Denver....

SAN FRANCISCO -- Yahoo and Linksys rolled out a new telephone in the United States on Thursday that lets people make free Internet calls as well as traditional analog calls. The dual-mode cordless telephone made by Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems, used Yahoo Messenger software to access Internet services including digital online calling. "Yahoo Messenger and Linksys are giving consumers the flexibility to make and receive free Internet calls from the same phone they use for their home line," said Yahoo Real Time Communications director Jeff Bonforte. The telephone also lets people search the Internet for the telephone numbers of local restaurants or businesses using their US Postal Service zip codes and then get instantly connected. Internet calls between Yahoo Messenger voice service users anywhere in the world are free, which has been the standard for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services from industry stalwarts including Skype, Google and Microsoft....

The days of tax-free Internet shopping are fading. Starting Jan. 1, 2007, state residents will pay Vermont sales tax on Internet purchases if the transaction is made with one of the 1,047 companies that have signed on to the "streamlined sales tax project," said Michael Wasser, a policy analyst for the Vermont Department of Taxes. The tax project adds local and state sales taxes to the cost of the Internet sale -- assuming the shopper lives in one of the 21 states participating in the program. "Internet sales continue to grow year to year. ... It's creating a problem because our tax base is eroding over time," Wasser said. The voluntary program is projected to have a 15 percent compliance rate from online retailers and send $3.1 million to Vermont's coffers in fiscal year 2007, said Sara Teachout, a fiscal analyst with the Legislative Joint Fiscal Office....
