WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- With increased numbers of users and an increase in the amount of providers of online dating services comes opportunity for cyber crime and a need for users of these services to maintain safety awareness while surfing for love. In light of this, public safety advocates and state lawmakers are promoting legislation to create greater safety protections for online daters in 2007. Legislative efforts are already under way in several states to reduce cyber crime. The Safer Online Dating Alliance (SODA), a nationwide coalition dedicated to improving online dating safety, is working with public safety proponents nationally and in Michigan, Florida, Illinois and Texas to advance legislation addressing cyber crime and improving online dating safety. "Online dating has had a positive effect on many people's lives, but the anonymous nature of the process poses unique safety threats and requires extra precaution," said Celeste Moyers, program director of SODA....

Brazil: An Interview with Marcia Loebick

In my previous article, Single Gringo Beware, I covered the sad story of Raymond Merrill (pictured to the right), a US musician that came to Brazil in the pursuit of love and was murdered by a Brazilian woman, Regina Rachid, her boyfriend and an accomplice. It's a story that has hit both Brazilian and International headlines. The previous article also covered some other ways that foreigners are duped in Brazil when involved in relationships, and gave some general advice about how to reduce the risk. I received some interesting feedback on the article. Firstly from someone that had dated Regina Rachid twice, meeting her at a So Paulo shopping centre last year, around the time that Raymond Merrill first met her. When this person told Rachid his profession she became immediately disinterested, based on the particular type of work he was in (unfortunately I cannot detail this further for reasons of anonymity)....

Stull, Stull & Brody Announces Commencement of Lawsuit Against Actel Corporation for the Back-Dating of Stock Option
Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 10:58:01 AM by Blog57 Team
The law firm of Stull, Stull & Brody announces that a shareholder lawsuit has been commenced against certain members of the board of directors and certain executive officers of Actel Corporation (NASDAQ:ACTL - News) (``Actel'' or the ``Company''). The complaint alleges that certain current and prior officers and directors manipulated the prices of executive and director stock option grants (a.k.a. back-dated stock options). Such practice of awarding stock options to executives and directors at artificially low prices is alleged to violate the company's internal documents (such as the company's stock option plan), as well as state laws governing officer and director fiduciary duties and/or federal laws governing securities and taxation. In addition, the practice results in lower payments to companies, results in those companies under-reporting compensation expenses, and permits directors, officers and/or executives to unjustifiably reap millions and billions of dollars which should be disgorged and returned to the corporate coffers thereby contributing to the financial health of the company....

UK sex blogger casts roving eye over US men

Award-winning sex blogger turned successful author Abby Lee has just about had her fill of dating introverted British men - so much so she is considering moving to New York to take a sabbatical from them. Her book Girl With a One-Track Mind: Confessions of the Seductress Next Door has sold over 40,000 copies in Britain, and has been in the top 20 non-fiction paperback chart for the last 12 weeks. The book catalogues Lee's sexual life over a year - the one-night stands, casual flings and same-sex relationships - all of which are recorded in intimate detail. But she has reached an impasse with the British male and has high hopes the American species will provide better mating material. "I find Englishmen's half-hearted approach to dating so tiresome," the 33-year-old Lee - whose real name is Zoe Margolis - told Reuters in an interview....

Get a life and leave the real you at home in virtual online world

Dave Evans, a computer consultant in Boston who edits a blog about online dating, was hanging out in a strip club the other day when he noticed an extremely tall woman with horns and a tail standing next to him. He thought about asking her to take off her shirt -- hey, they were both in a strip club -- but thought the better of it. "It turned out she was the brand manager of a multinational corporation," said Evans, 38. "Thank God I didn't ask her to take off her top! I bought her a beer and we did talk about doing business together." Evans' confusion is understandable. The woman in question was not so much a woman as a digital representation of one, or an avatar. The beer he bought her was virtual. The strip club was in Second Life, the online 3-D interactive world built by San Francisco's Linden Lab, which currently boasts 1.2 million registered users....

MIKE MCGREEHAN: PREPS: Must-read books at your fingertips

A FAVORITE CUSTOM the nearly six years I've been based at the Alameda Journal office was to walk the couple of blocks to the temporary Alameda Free Library at Historic Alameda High School. Imagine the frustration, then, during the month or so the library was closed to prepare for the opening of the new library on the corner of Oak Street and Lincoln Avenue. Well, on Nov. 2, the new library officially opened to the public. To inaugurate the new place, what better time than to celebrate some of its contents. The sports selections consist mostly of old favorites and things on my to-read list. The latter includes a pair of football books: Peter Golenbock's "Cowboys Have Always Been My Heroes," and "When the Game Stands Tall," by former Contra Costa Times colleague and ex-Alameda resident Neil Hayes....

Finding a sitter hardest part about dating

Those who have been following this space the past couple of weeks will be happy to know that my lovely wife Bonnie and I are doing just fine, thank you. In fact, our relationship has never been better. Turns out marriage counseling really does work. So does Gas-X. Actually, the real reason our marriage has remained strong over the years is that we've never stopped dating. Each other, I mean. The problem with dating, though, as you grow older and have children, is finding a baby sitter. It's almost as difficult as deciding which bunch of incompetent yahoos to pull the lever for this Tuesday - the ones who will probably raise our taxes, or the ones who certainly will. But I digress. My wife and I now have teenagers who can baby-sit their younger siblings, but if you haven't reached that stage yet, you may be feeling some desperation....

Money-making dating game

Friends or fate, that's how you find your perfect match. Not by forking over money for online dating, speed dating or other singles-themed events. Only desperados, cheaters, social deviants and other undesirables resort to these. That's what ignorant romantics like me believe. But the owners of Toronto's successful singles services will tell you a different story. They'll talk about a market of more than 10 million singles in Canada, a dating industry in the United States that is worth $1 billion, and of the dozens of dating services available in Toronto alone. One of the largest services in North America is Toronto-based Lavalife with more than $100 million in annual revenue and some 600,000 members worldwide, who exchange in excess of 1.3 million messages every day....
